Slug Success Adviser Update 1/5/18

Hello Slug Success users,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing break and are gearing up for a wonderful Winter quarter.

I have a few updates to share today, which are mostly relevant to department (Major/Minor) advisers. As always, if you have any questions about anything in this email or about Slug Success in general, please email slugsuccess-help@ucsc.edu.

Minor advisees added - All advisers who advise for minors (according to the College and Major/Minor Advising Directory) are now assigned to their students in Slug Success. If you advise for a minor and do not see students with that minor in your list of "My Assigned Students," please let me know so I can troubleshoot. Remember that minors (and majors) update overnight, so if a student's plan is added or changes in AIS today, they will not show up in your list of students until tomorrow.

Departmental advising limited to assigned advisers - Since both major and minor advisers are now automatically assigned to students, starting Monday 1/8/18 we will be limiting students' ability to schedule appointments for services that begin with the Maj: prefix, so they can only make appointments with their assigned advisers. This mirrors the existing setup for College advising, and should cut down on the number of appointments created by students with departments other than their own. There are two exceptions to this new setup:
  • A new service called "Exploring A New Major/Minor has been added, which is not restricted. Students who select this reason when looking to schedule a new appointment will be able to schedule with any adviser who has this reason included in their appointment availability. Major/minor advisers MUST add this reason to their availability if they want non-assigned students to be able to self-schedule appointments.
  • Staff can still schedule appointments on a student's behalf for any reason as they have done previously, i.e. using the Appointment Center or via the Schedule an Appointment link on a student's Slug Success profile. This includes student staff using a "Front Desk"/functional account and any Front Desk staff, as well as anyone with an Adviser role.
To assist advisers in academic departments with this new scheduling functionality, I will be holding an open lab session next Tuesday 1/9/18 from 1-3pm in the Kerr Hall computer lab (room 8). Please feel free to drop by any time during that session if you would like help setting up your availability for the quarter, whether you're new to Slug Success or just need help understanding these latest changes.

Student employees - I sent an email earlier this week about student employees. Thank you to everyone who has already responded with your updates. If you've not had a chance to do so, please be sure to read that email and let me know if any changes need to be made for the students who will be working with Slug Success in your office this quarter.

Thank you!
Amy
