How to Use Kiosk Mode

Slug Success Kiosk mode can, depending on how it is configured for your location, allow students to swipe their ID card (or type their student ID number) to check-in for scheduled appointments, drop-in hours, or workshops, record lab visits or resource usage, schedule future appointments, request appointments, and/or send messages to advisers. This page provides instructions for entering the Slug Success Kiosk mode. If you need assistance configuring your location’s Kiosk functionality before getting started, please email slugsuccess-help@ucsc.edu.

To enter Kiosk mode, log into Slug Success. On any Slug Success screen, look in the top  right of the window for the Additional Modes grid menu, and select Kiosk.

A new window will pop up asking you to select your location. Take note of the warning message at the top of the window, and be sure to close any other Slug Success windows behind the new one to prevent unintended data access.

Select your location from those listed in the window. If your location is not listed, contact slugsuccess-help@ucsc.edu for help.

On the next screen, select a Single Service (purpose) or All Available Services (multi-purpose) mode.kiosk-mode-select.png

Single Purpose Mode will allow students to do one specific action once they’ve logged in. You will need to specify which action this is on the following screen.

Multi-Purpose Mode allows students to specify what they want to do after they’ve logged in.

After you choose which mode you want to use, you will be taken directly to the student login screen.kiosk-screen.png

Students can swipe their ID card using the USB card swiper provided by the Slug Success office, or type their ID # in the box.

If you set up the kiosk in Single Purpose Mode, the student will be taken directly to the service specified when you opened Kiosk mode. If this service requires no further action from the student (i.e. workshop or office check-in), the kiosk will log the student’s check-in and return to the login page immediately, ready for another student.

If you set up the kiosk in Multiple Purpose Mode, the student will have the option to choose from the available services, and can interact with the kiosk as long as they like, including completing multiple actions.

In either mode, the kiosk will automatically log the student out after one minute of inactivity, and return to the login page. Prior to logout, a popup window will appear, to make sure the student is not logged out if they are still using the kiosk.
